How to Care For Your Carpet Pad

When it comes to home carpet care, most homeowners focus on vacuuming, while occasionally scheduling a deeper steam cleaning to get rid of tough stains. But what about your carpet pad? In reality, you also need to care for your carpet pad for efficient intermediate carpet cleaning in Montreal. This is especially true after a pet has an accident or you spill wine or coffee on the carpet.

Why Clean Your Carpet Pad?

After you spill a glass of wine on the floor, the first instinct is to dry and thoroughly clean the visible stain on the carpet. This is what you should do — after all, the sooner you act, the easier it will be to completely remove the stain.

However, these cleaning efforts often forget that the liquid (and associated staining) often penetrates to the pad beneath. Carpet pad actually absorbs moisture, which can result in mildew growth and leave a musty smell that won’t go away.

Carpet Pad Cleaning Essentials

So how do you clean the carpet pad after a spill or pet accident? You’ll have to start by lifting up the carpet covering the affected area. To do this, remove the fasteners at the edge of the carpet in the location closest to where the spill occurred.

Once you’ve exposed the area, use clean, dry rags to absorb any liquid from the pad. Try to dry the padding as much as possible. Next, mix one liter of warm water with approximately 230 milliliters of white vinegar. Use a sponge to apply this mixture.

After the water/vinegar mixture sits for half an hour, apply a mix of dish soap and warm water to the area. Scrub the area clean, then rinse it with a clean sponge to remove all soap and vinegar residue. Finally, be sure to dry the pad completely. If an odor lingers, sprinkling baking soda on the pad and letting it sit for 15 minutes can help remove the scent (just be sure to vacuum it up before replacing the carpet).

Once the cleaning is complete, simply pull the carpet back into place and re-secure the fasteners. Now you can have confidence that all layers of your carpet have been cleaned properly.

Conclusion

Though homeowners can sometimes handle cleanup for small patches of carpet padding, more intensive cleaning should generally be left to the professionals. The last thing you want is to completely tear out your carpets and not be sure how to put them back into place! As you exercise caution and clean up small spills as quickly as possible, you’ll be able to keep your carpet pad in good shape.
